Planning a Trip for Me & Serendipity

View World 2016 on tedvanrossum's travel map.

Traveling, like any other Grand Project requires a lot of planning;... the longer the trip, the more planning that needs to be done. I've been at it for a couple of months (planning that is), and a trip of this magnitude requires so many details to be ironed out;

  • Fun things like where will I go and what do I want to see?
  • How will I get there and where will I stay?
  • And more mundane things like Visa and Vaccinations.

There are so many decisions to make, that will have an impact on the enjoyability of the trip...

But I am not regimenting this like a military campaign; I have invited serendipity to come along and ensure that I have fun.

Aachen sculptures and City Hall

I am here in Aachen and they have the most fun sculptures. Here are some pictures.
We also visited the town center where they had a craft’s market. That is the city hall.

Aachen grave site

In a more sober moment, we went for a walk with my sister to the cemetery to see her husband’s grave site. Here in Aachen they have a good custom that you can buy a 20 year lease for a grave site. You bury your loved one and then you create a memorial garden plot to celebrate their life. You visit the site and keep it up, and in doing so you spend time with them in a comfortable fashion. At the site for my brother-in-law; each plant has a meaning and invokes memories.
When the lease is up you can renew the lease, or let it lapse… The cemetery will then recycle the plot for the next grieving family.

Berlin: Hotel Splendid

Hotel Splendid

This is used to be a very classy Berlin hotel just before World War 1, it now just contains offices.
The sculptures on the facade though, are amazing.

Here is the Brandenburg Gate

It is also very popular with the tourists. It has a lot of decoration as well, all of it about fighting and struggles.
