In a more sober moment, we went for a walk with my sister to the cemetery to see her husband’s grave site. Here in Aachen they have a good custom that you can buy a 20 year lease for a grave site. You bury your loved one and then you create a memorial garden plot to celebrate their life. You visit the site and keep it up, and in doing so you spend time with them in a comfortable fashion. At the site for my brother-in-law; each plant has a meaning and invokes memories.
When the lease is up you can renew the lease, or let it lapse… The cemetery will then recycle the plot for the next grieving family.
